    About the Product

Equisetum hyemale, commonly called Horsetail or Scouring Rush, is a striking, reed-like perennial plant often used in water gardens and modern landscapes.

     General Information

    • Scientific name: Equisetum hyemale

    • Common names: Horsetail, Scouring Rush, Rough Horsetail, Snake Grass

    • Family: Equisetaceae (an ancient plant family, 300+ million years old )

    • Type: Perennial, evergreen, reed-like plant (non-flowering, reproduces by spores)

    • Height: 2–4 ft (sometimes taller in ideal wet habitats)

    • Appearance: Tall, jointed, hollow green stems with black bands/rings at nodes

    Growing Conditions

    • Sun Light: Full sun to partial shade (best color in sun).

    • Soil: Moist, sandy or loamy soil; thrives in wet, boggy areas.

    • Water: Loves wet conditions — can grow in shallow water (pond edges, marshes).

     Care & Maintenance

    • Fertilizer: Not usually required; thrives in rich, organic soils.

    • Pruning: Cut old/dry stems to maintain fresh appearance.

    • Pests/Diseases: Very resistant; almost pest-free.

Note: Horsetail is very invasive if planted in open soil — it spreads quickly by underground rhizomes. Best grown in containers or controlled pond edges.

     Uses

    • Ornamental: Adds vertical, architectural greenery to water gardens, containers, and modern landscapes.

    • Erosion control: Stabilizes soil in wetlands and along pond edges.

    • Historical use: Stems contain silica → used as a natural scouring material to clean pots/pans (hence the name "Scouring Rush").

    • Medicinal (traditional): Horsetail extracts used for diuretic and wound-healing purposes (though not commonly used today without expert guidance).
