About the Product

The Vanilla Plant is the source of natural vanilla flavoring, one of the most popular spices in the world. It comes from the orchid genus Vanilla—most commonly Vanilla planifolia.

🌱 General Information

  • Scientific name: Vanilla planifolia (main commercial species)

  • Family: Orchidaceae

  • Type: Tropical climbing orchid (perennial vine)

  • Height: Can grow up to 10–15 m (30–50 ft) if supported

  • Leaves: Thick, fleshy, lance-shaped, green

  • Stems: Long, climbing, with aerial roots at nodes (helps cling to supports)

  • Flowers: Pale greenish-yellow, orchid-like, open for only 1 day

  • Fruit/Pods: Long, green capsules (15–25 cm), which become the familiar dark, fragrant vanilla beans after curing

🌍 Growing Conditions

  • Climate: Hot, humid, tropical

  • Temperature: 20–30°C (68–86°F)

  • Sun Light: Partial shade (too much sun burns leaves, too much shade reduces flowering)

  • Humidity: 80%+ preferred

  • Soil: Loose, rich in organic matter, well-draining; slightly acidic (pH 6–7)

  • Watering: Needs regular moisture but must not be waterlogged

🌼 Cultivation & Care

  • Propagation: Cuttings (stem cuttings with at least 3–5 nodes)

  • Support: Grown on trellises, poles, or living trees as a climbing vine

  • Flowering: Begins after 2–3 years of growth

  • Pollination:

    • In nature: pollinated by specific bees (Melipona) in Mexico

    • Elsewhere: flowers must be hand-pollinated within 24 hours of opening

  • Harvesting: Pods are harvested 8–9 months after pollination when they turn yellow at the tips

🍃 Vanilla Bean Processing

The fresh pods are odorless until cured. Curing involves:

  1. Killing: Wilting pods (hot water or sun) to stop growth

  2. Sweating: Wrapping pods to promote enzymatic reactions

  3. Drying: Sun-drying to reduce moisture

  4. Conditioning: Storing in closed boxes for months to develop full aroma

🌿 Uses

  • Culinary: Flavoring for desserts, chocolate, beverages, baking

  • Aromatic: Perfumes, candles, essential oils

  • Medicinal: Mild antioxidant, calming effects, sometimes used in traditional remedies

Tip: Vanilla is labor-intensive to grow because of hand pollination and the long curing process—this is why natural vanilla is so expensive compared to synthetic vanillin.
