    Tillandsia – Plant Details

    Scientific Information

    • Scientific Name: Tillandsia spp.

    • Family: Bromeliaceae

    • Common Names:

      • Air Plant , Tillandsia , Sky Plant

There are over 650 species of Tillandsia, ranging from tiny delicate forms to large striking specimens.

     Plant Description

    • Type: Epiphytic perennial (grows on other plants or objects, not in soil)

    • Leaves:

      • Thin, stiff, silvery-green or grayish

      • Covered with trichomes (special hairs that absorb moisture and nutrients from the air)

      • Rosette-shaped or elongated depending on species

    • Roots:

      • Small and mostly used for anchoring, not for nutrient absorption

    • Flowers:

      • Usually tubular and brightly colored (pink, purple, red, yellow)

      • Blooming period varies by species

    • Growth Habit: Can attach to wood, rocks, shells, or hang freely.

    Sun Light

    • Prefers bright, indirect light.

    • Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf burn.

     Watering

    • Air plants absorb water from humidity in the air.

    • Common methods:

      1. Misting: Mist leaves 2–3 times per week in dry climates.

      2. Soaking: Submerge plant in water for 15–30 minutes once a week, then shake off excess water.

    • Avoid leaving plants sitting in water → can cause rot.

    • Adjust watering frequency based on humidity in your area.

    Fertilizer

    • Use a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer (diluted to ¼ strength) once a month.

    • Apply via misting or soak during watering.

    • Avoid strong fertilizers; they can burn delicate leaves.

    Uses & Features

    • Air purifying — though small, contributes to indoor air quality.
