Plant Overview

• Botanical Name: Syzygium aromaticum

• Family: Myrtaceae

• Type: Evergreen tropical tree

• Origin: Maluku Islands (Indonesia), now cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Zanzibar, etc.

• Height: Can grow 8–12 meters tall in favorable conditions.

• Parts Used: Dried flower buds → cloves (spice)

 Description

• Leaves: Opposite, shiny, and aromatic.

• Flower buds: Pinkish when fresh → harvested and sun-dried → dark brown “cloves.”

• Flowers: Clusters of red/pink buds that open into small white flowers.

• Bark: Greyish with aromatic oils.

1.Sun Light

• Needs full sun to partial shade.

• Outdoor growth requires tropical/subtropical climate.

2. Watering

• Requires regular watering, especially when young.

• Soil should stay moist but well-drained.

• Mature trees tolerate short dry periods.

3. Soil

• Grows best in fertile, well-drained loamy soil, rich in organic matter.

• Prefers slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–7).

4. Fertilizer

• Apply organic compost or well-rotted manure regularly.

• NPK fertilizers can be given during the growing season for higher yield.

5. Propagation

• Usually propagated from seeds (fresh seeds germinate best).

• Seeds take 2–3 months to germinate.

• Grafted plants are also used for faster fruiting.

• Cloves (dried flower buds) are widely used as a spice in curries, biryanis, masalas, and sweets.

• Used in spice blends like garam masala.

• Clove oil used in flavoring foods and beverages.

 Medicinal

• Clove oil contains eugenol, which has antiseptic, anesthetic, and antibacterial properties.

• Used in toothache relief, sore throat, indigestion, cough remedies.

• Traditionally used in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine.

 Other Uses

• Ingredient in perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics.

• Used in making incense and essential oils.

Note: Clove oil is strong — excessive use can irritate skin or stomach. Always use in moderation.
