    About the Product

    🌱 General Information

    • Family: Zingiberaceae (ginger family)

    • Type: Herbaceous perennial

    • Height: 6–15 feet (2–4.5 m) when mature

    • Leaves: Long, lance-shaped, dark green leaves (up to 2 feet long).

    • Flowers: Small, white with purple or yellow streaks, borne on a long stalk near the ground.

    • Fruits/Pods: Small green capsules that contain aromatic black seeds (the spice).

    🌍 Growing Conditions

    • Native Range: Southern India, Sri Lanka (major commercial cultivation also in Guatemala).

    • Climate: Tropical, humid, warm (requires shade and high humidity).

    • Temperature: Ideal range 15–35°C (59–95°F). Sensitive to frost.

    • Soil: Rich, loamy, well-drained soil with high organic matter. Prefers slightly acidic soils (pH 5.5–6.5).

    • Light: Prefers filtered shade (like under taller trees); direct hot sun can damage leaves.

    • Water: Requires consistent moisture but not waterlogging. Best with frequent light irrigation.

    🌼 Cultivation & Care

    • Propagation: By seeds (slow germination) or rhizome division (preferred for quicker results).

    • Spacing: 6–8 feet between plants for good air circulation.

    • Fertilization: Needs organic compost/manure; additional nitrogen-rich fertilizers help pod production.

    • Pruning: Remove old, dry shoots regularly to encourage new growth.

    • Harvesting: Pods are ready in 2–3 years. Harvest when fruits turn light green but before fully ripening (to preserve aroma).

    🌿 Uses

    • Culinary: Spice for curries, desserts, teas, and coffee.

    • Medicinal: Traditionally used for digestion, freshening breath, and as an antioxidant.

    • Aromatic: Essential oil used in perfumes and flavoring.
