    Christmas Cactus

    About the Product

    Plant Overview

    • Botanical Name: Schlumbergera spp. (commonly Schlumbergera bridgesii or hybrids)

    • Family: Cactaceae

    • Type: Epiphytic cactus (grows on trees/rocks in nature)

    • Origin: Coastal mountains of Brazil

    • Height/Spread: Usually 30–60 cm tall and wide when mature

    • Flowering Season: Winter (around December–January)

     Description

    • Stems: Flattened, segmented stems that look like thick, scalloped leaves.

    • Flowers: Bright red, pink, white, purple, or yellow tubular flowers, often blooming at the stem tips.

    • Habit: Trailing or arching growth, making it ideal for hanging pots.

     Care Guide

    1. Sun Light

    • Prefers bright, indirect light.

    • Avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch stems.

    • Can tolerate lower light but may flower less.

    2. Watering

    • Needs regular watering, unlike desert cacti.

    • Keep soil evenly moist during growing/flowering season.

    • Let the top 2–3 cm dry before watering again.

    • Reduce watering slightly after flowering (rest period).

    3. Soil

    • Best in a well-draining mix (cactus soil + compost + perlite).

    • Avoid heavy clay soils.

    4. Fertilizer

    • Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring–summer.

    • Switch to a high-potassium fertilizer before flowering (to encourage buds).

    5. Flowering Tips

    • To encourage blooming, provide a short-day, cool period in fall:

      • About 12–14 hours of darkness per day

      • Cooler nights around 10–15°C (50–59°F)

    • Once buds form, avoid moving the plant (or buds may drop).

     Uses

    1. Ornamental value – a favorite indoor plant for holiday blooms.

    2. Gift plant – often given around Christmas.

    3. Air purifier – like many houseplants, improves indoor air quality.

Note: Christmas Cactus is non-toxic to cats and dogs,
